DIGITAL CAPTURE AND PROCESSING OF ALL DOCUMENTED SECTIONS OF THE VESSEL

For the digital capture and processing of all documented sections of the vessel, the use of a handheld scanner for three-dimensional scanning of the parts was adopted. The Creality CR-SCAN 01 3D scanner employs a smart large-scale alignment algorithm to ensure automatic matching without manual mesh alignment, calibration, or the use of markers.

The CR-SCAN 01 has 2 scanning modes. The handheld scanning mode is more flexible, supporting the scanning of objects of different sizes without the need for markers. The tripod mode offers automatic scanning, supporting multiple shots that are automatically aligned to provide a more complete model. The alignment algorithm for multiple shots is highly accurate, based on color and texture features.

The CR-SCAN 01 enables model processing, automatic hole filling, color repair, sub-layer recognition, and smooth noise removal. The objects exported from the CR-SCAN 01 can be in .stl or .obj format. In this project, the .obj format was used, which is directly editable in Blender. The 3D scanner was used to scan preserved sections of the hull in order to acquire their three-dimensional digital format, texture, and color.
